Art Therapist

Location: Everett Office

I integrate a creative arts therapy approach with counseling, using trauma sensitive practices, informed by but not limited to theories such as: narrative therapy, liberation psychology, and DBT informed principles, depending on client needs. I may occasionally use limited self disclosure when relevant- navigating mental health is a human experience you are not alone in. I work with clients collaboratively, encouraging creative autonomy to support empowerment, personal discovery and self-expression. Art therapy can aid the therapeutic process in many ways, such as expanding pathways for communication and deepened insight. Art materials are available as appropriate in session and experiences are tailored to each client. No prior art experience is needed. Art products made in session are treated confidentially and stored securely in-office, or clients may take their work with them.

What is Art Therapy?

Creative expression can promote healing, self-discovery, and growth for people of all ages. Art therapy is a therapeutic modality that can provide all of the benefits of traditional counseling, supported by the intentional use of art media, techniques, and processes. Like traditional counseling, it can help deepen insight around goals, emotions and relationships. Art making in session is offered as another tool for therapeutic exploration. It can be a tool for non-verbal communication, nervous system regulation, and developing a sense of safety and support in the therapeutic relationship.

Using art materials to explore therapeutic issues is found to be moving, transformational and empowering for many clients. Art making can be a helpful way to process experiences and feelings that may be too painful or difficult to approach verbally.

No prior art experience is necessary. Materials are provided in sessions at no extra cost to clients. Some clients have little to no art experience, others may be seasoned artists, or somewhere in between. All experience levels are welcome. I do not interpret client art. Rather, I offer art materials and space for clients to explore creative processes and increase insight around their own experiences.

Art therapy is a professional specialization with its own ethical guidelines, formal training criteria and credentialing processes. I am trained in both counseling and the art therapy specialization through Antioch University and working toward my post-graduate Registered Art Therapist (ATR) credential with the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB). https://atcb.org/what-is-art-therapy/

Art therapy can be a good fit for those seeking approaches less dependent on verbal communication, or who enjoy other forms of expression along with speaking. Art therapy isn’t always a good fit for everyone. If we work together, sharing your reactions to art therapy processes in session can help us navigate this effectively.
